What is the Best Time for Kitesurfing in Rodrigues?

People who’re planning to visit off-the-beaten-path Rodrigues solely for kitesurfing should time their trip between May and October. During the season, the wind can reach a whopping 35 knots which can challenge even professionals.

Rodrigues is very beginner-friendly when it comes to kitesurfing since the wind speed usually reaches at least 10 knots a year-round.

Each year, Rodrigues island is a host of an international kitesurfing competition (RIKF) where some big names perform in the water. That just adds up to the credibility of the island as a kitesurfing destination.

If you’re looking for unforgettable kitesurfing experience, then head over between May and October since most schools and rental places are opened and the winds can’t be more favorable.

What is the Best Place for Kitesurfing?

This tiny island is located about 550 km off Mauritius coast with a size of 8 by 18 km.

A few kitesurfing spots are featuring flat and turquoise waters:
Ebony Mourouk Beach is the main kitesurfing spot on the island featuring a long lagoon and flat waters during the whole year. The steady wind during most of the year of at least 10 knots is what makes this lagoon such a perfect spot for kitesurfing. The water is just about 1.5 m deep at most places and if you go further off the coast, you will be greeted by a diverse and colorful reef. The SE wind from Australia blows through the whole year making this lagoon one of the most visited places in the entire island. Not to forget, there is a kitesurfing school where you can take lessons or rent the equipment, so you don’t have to worry about transporting your own.

Jimmy’s Pass is where the real action takes part. The long beach featuring wild waters and steady winds is all you need for water sports like kitesurfing, wind boarding and surfing. The waves can reach a few meters further away from the coast, but near the beach, the water isn’t deeper than 2 meters. This place hosts many smaller competitions that take place through the kitesurfing season. If you’re experienced kitesurfer, then it’s a place you want to be. Further off the coast, there is a colorful reef with huge biodiversity, so if you’re going to explore it, there are many options to hire a boat or tour.

Sand Bar is just a small sandbank located next to Jimmy’s Pass that offers some excellent weather conditions. A steady wind, flat and crystal clear waters are all you need for a great kitesurfing session. Although this place isn’t the biggest one, you will probably have it all by yourself! This tiny island is located about 550 km off Mauritius coast with a size of 8 by 18 km.

Taking Kitesurfing Lessons on the Island

The water and wind conditions are just perfect for experienced kitesurfers, but beginners shouldn’t be discouraged – there are a few places where you can take lessons and pick it up quickly.

Probably the best place is Osmosis Kite Center that sits just on the main kitesurfing spot Ebony Mourouk Beach. The area is extremely relaxed and the staff is very friendly and patient. The majority of people who are staying or working there are passionate kitesurfers themselves, so you can expect a great time while picking up a technique. Basically, this is the only place where some life is going on after sunset. On some days the owner throws a party which is an ideal way to socialize with other kitesurfers on the island.

There is a huge possibility that you’re visiting the island with your own kitesurfing equipment, but if you don’t have one, you shouldn’t worry as you can rent it at your hotel. People who decide to travel to Rodrigues with kitesurfing equipment should be aware that Air Mauritius allows only 20 kg of baggage (equipment included).

Did you know that Rodrigues is a host of an international kitesurf festival and competition almost every year? The huge festival that attracts the biggest names in the sport is taking place from the 26th of June this year.
